ASTM C78: Flexural Strength of Concrete (Using Simple Beam with Third-Point Loading)

What the ASTM C78 test measures
ASTM C78 is the flexural strength test for concrete. A 6 by 6 inch beam, cast on the jobsite and cured alongside the cylinders, is loaded at the third points of its span until it cracks on the tension face. The stress at failure is reported as the modulus of rupture, usually 500 to 800 psi for typical paving concrete.
Where ASTM C39 answers how much a column can be squeezed, C78 answers how much a slab can bend before it cracks. That is the load case pavements, airfield aprons, industrial floors, and slabs-on-grade actually see, which is why highway and airport specifications are written around flexural strength rather than compressive strength.
How the ASTM C78 test works, step by step
Beams are cast in the field per ASTM C31, consolidated in two layers, and moist cured. Before testing they are kept saturated, because a dry surface skin raises the apparent strength and scatters the results. In the machine the beam sits on two supports with load applied through two points spaced one third of the span apart, so the middle third of the beam sees pure bending with no shear.
Load is applied continuously at a controlled rate until rupture. The technician measures the beam at the break, records where the fracture occurred, and calculates modulus of rupture from the maximum load, span, width, and depth. A fracture outside the middle third gets a different formula, or is discarded if it is too far out.
What the numbers mean
Specifications state a required modulus of rupture at an age, often 650 psi at 28 days for paving, or a lower opening-to-traffic value at 3 or 7 days. Because beams scatter more than cylinders, acceptance usually averages two or three beams and sets a floor for the lowest individual.
Many owners use flexural strength during mix design and then correlate it to compressive strength for routine control, since cylinders are lighter, cheaper, and easier to handle. That correlation only holds for the same materials, so it has to be rebuilt whenever the aggregate source or mix changes.
What can throw the result off
Beams are unforgiving. Letting them dry before testing, rough handling that starts microcracks, honeycombing on the tension face, and poorly aligned bearing blocks all reduce or scatter the reported strength. A 150-pound beam that was bounced in the back of a truck is not the same specimen that left the site. Curing tanks and moist rooms per ASTM C511 exist largely to protect beams from exactly this.
Common questions about ASTM C78
How is flexural strength related to compressive strength?
Roughly 7 to 10 times the square root of compressive strength in psi, but the ratio depends on aggregate type and shape, so specifications that care about bending require beams rather than a formula.
Why third-point loading instead of center-point?
Third-point loading puts a uniform maximum moment across the middle third, so the beam fails at its weakest section in that zone. Center-point loading forces failure at midspan and gives a higher, less conservative number. ASTM C293 covers center-point; C78 is what most paving specs call for.
How many beams per pour?
Typically one set per day of paving or per fixed quantity of concrete, with beams tested at the opening age and at 28 days.
