What the ASTM C1026 test measures

ASTM C1026 measures the resistance of ceramic and glass tile to freeze-thaw cycling. Tile specimens are saturated with water and cycled between freezing and thawing conditions for a specified number of cycles, then inspected for cracking, spalling, crazing, and other damage. The result is a pass or fail against the tile's stated frost resistance classification.

Tile that absorbs water and then freezes will crack as the water expands, so any tile specified for exterior walls, pool decks, patios, and entries in a freezing climate has to demonstrate frost resistance. Manufacturers publish the result; independent testing verifies it or settles a dispute after a failure.

How the ASTM C1026 test works, step by step

A set of tile specimens is examined and photographed, then saturated by immersion or vacuum saturation. Specimens are placed in a freezer, frozen to the specified temperature, and thawed in water, with the cycle repeated for the required number of cycles, commonly 15 or more. After cycling, each specimen is inspected under set lighting and compared to its pre-test condition. Any visible damage is a failure for that specimen.

What the numbers mean

The result is reported as the number of specimens showing damage out of the set, with a description and photographs of the damage. Specifications reference ANSI A137.1 and the manufacturer's frost resistance claim, and a tile marked frost resistant is expected to pass without visible deterioration.

What can throw the result off

Incomplete saturation before cycling makes a weak tile look sound. Freezer temperature uniformity and thaw water temperature must be controlled, and inspection lighting standardized, or subtle crazing is missed.

Common questions about ASTM C1026

Which tiles need this test?

Any ceramic, porcelain, or glass tile going into an exterior or unheated application where freezing occurs. Interior tile does not.

Does porcelain automatically pass?

Low absorption porcelain usually does, but the test is on the product as manufactured, glaze included, and glaze crazing is a frequent failure mode.
